Photo of PatrickI find architecture to be a fascinating field; creatively, conceptually, and technically. Working to solve problems is something that I have done from a young age. Being able to creatively solve a problem elegantly is very satisfying and drives me to think differently. I aspire to positively impact people’s lives through good design and creative solutions.

As a child, I would create plans and designs for many different things. I would draw out my designs for houses and boats on grid paper – I always wanted to design “the best” layout of whatever it was that I drew. As a teenager, I designed and built small projects such as fitted wardrobes and bespoke shelving in my parents’ house.

Looking at the world around me, I find myself contemplating the design of my environment. I observe and muse on the patterns of tiles or bricks and ponder changes to these patterns, and the reasons they have been done as they have. After studying architecture, I now find myself better able to appreciate small details in the design of the built environment.

Before studying architecture, I worked in the IT industry for over six years. In my IT work, I always looked to creatively solve problems simply and elegantly. As part of a fast-paced industry, I had to be adaptable, and quick in my upskilling on new software. These skills have served me well throughout my study of architecture.

From 2016 to 2018, I studied my Bachelor of Architectural Studies at Unitec. And from 2019 to 2020 I studied my Master of Architecture (Professional) and graduated with honours in April 2021.  Studying architecture is both challenging and rewarding. It has challenged me to think differently and more creatively. It has challenged me to critically assess designs. While designing can be frustrating at times, the experience of a design taking shape is immensely exciting. Modelling a design, digitally or physically, I find to be an engaging experience.

SANNZ LogoWhile studying, I was also involved in the community of architectural students at Unitec. In my first year, I was a class representative for the first-year cohort. Subsequently, I was a SANNZ (Student Architecture Network New Zealand) representative in my second, third, and fourth years of study. And from 2018 to early 2020, I was a Unitec student representative on the NZIA Auckland Branch Committee.
