As part of my 2017 Design Studio course, I was the project manager in a team of eight architecture students. We had to design and construct an art installation for GLOW@Artweek Auckland that would fit well within the context of Windsor Reserve in Devonport.
One of the overarching aspects of the project was a “zero waste, zero budget”. Our team took this objective very seriously, with our art installation being constructed out of bamboo and repurposed truck tyre inner tubes. Using these two materials, we constructed prefabricated panel elements that could be easily transported, and quickly assembled onsite.
Lit panel with harbour behind.
Peeking through a gap and looking down the length of the installation.
Fully lit, full height panels.
Looking up at the apex with trees behind.
Visitors walking through installation, and casting shadows.
Waiting for loading onto the truck.
Awaiting panelling to be added.
At Unitec, to make sure it is ready for final installation.
At Unitec, testing process for assembly onsite.
Attaching bamboo as panelling using lashing.
First bamboo frame test.
Recovered from used truck tyre inner tubes.
